In the middle of the show stands Usnavi, the dagger owner who takes care of an elderly Cuban lady in the neighborhood, takes care of a pretty girl who works in a nearby beauty salon and dreams of winning the lottery. and flee to her home in the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Usnavi’s childhood friend Nina returned to the neighborhood after her freshman year in college with startling news for her parents who had spent their savings to build a better life for their daughter. Eventually Usnavi and the people of the neighboring region get a feel for what it means to be home.
The scent of cafecito caliente hangs in the air right in front of the 181st Street subway station, where the dreamy kaleidoscope brings this vibrant and cohesive community together. At the intersection of it all is the sympathetic and magnetic dagger owner Usnavi, who saves every penny of his daily work which he hopes, imagines and sings for a better life.
