As Navy Captain Georg Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) writes to the convent asking the pastor who can save his seven naughty children, Mary gets the job. The captain’s wife is dead and often absent, and he runs the household violently like the ships he sails on. The children are unhappy and disgusted by the leaders whose father continues to employ them, and they managed to escape individually. When Mary arrives, she initially encounters the same hostility, but her kindness, understanding, and cheerfulness soon draw her to him and bring much-needed joy throughout their lives — including the life of the captain.
